about

"One of the most exciting performers to ever appear here - exquisite!"
The Troubadour
This is Paul in one of his elements - performing live - half singer… half guitarist (… half stand-up).

There was concern about the speed of these recordings but I checked Savage Land against the studio recording that I have and they are identical pitch. This actually is the speed and skill he managed to deliver ‘live’. He was speedy and energetic at only 24 years old.

Note: there are a couple of strange crackles in Boys Of Bedlam.

Special thanks to Terry B who sent some tracks from Adelaide as well as Martin L who sent recordings from Melbourne with this info attached:
"The original was recorded on an 8 track Tascam and the 2 track tapes were also recorded on good quality Tascams.
The track - Picking Violets With Louise - is one Paul gave me I think in May or June 2005. I have no idea where the recording is from or when it was recorded. Crystal Silence (Chick Corea) was adapted by Paul which he teamed with Amsterdam (Jaques Brel - although he uses the David Bowie version)"

"1C1 was an acoustic music venue situated in Carlton Vic. It ran only on Sunday nights and would have around 5 or 6 acts.

The room had been the Princess Hill High Drama Studio and was numbered 1C1 - hence the name of the club. Approx 150 people would rock up for the Sunday night show. The manager Phillip Rogers died much to young over 20 years ago, the club closed soon after I think.

All the tracks are solo Paul Smyth - mostly he played an Ovation guitar.

The 1C1 recordings were recorded using a pair of Revox A77 recorders and from memory whenever the engineer started running low on tape he would switch the machines down to 3 3/4 ips. As Paul was usually the final act he would be the one to be recorded at the slower speed. The engineer maintained his 2 Revox's well and from memory were reliable with no speed problems."
